Set It and Forget It is Not Effective Cybersecurity Strategy

‘Set It and Forget It’ is Not an Effective Cybersecurity Strategy!

April 6, 2023

Cybersecurity is no joke. With the constant threat of hackers and cybercriminals lurking in the digital world, it’s more important than ever to ensure that your online presence and your patient data are protected. Unfortunately, many people believe that a “set it and forget it” strategy is enough to keep them or their practice safe. But the truth is, cybersecurity measures must be applied dynamically to stay ahead of the bad guys.

Let’s face it, the internet is a constantly evolving entity. Just like the seasons change, so do the tactics of cybercriminals. They are always finding new ways to exploit vulnerabilities in software, steal personal information, mine data, and wreak havoc on our lives and businesses. That’s why it’s important to stay on top of the latest security measures and update them frequently.

Think of cybersecurity like a game of whack-a-mole. You can set up all the defenses you want, but the moles (hackers) are always going to keep popping up. You can’t just set it and forget it, hoping that your defenses will hold up forever. You need to be ready to whack those moles as soon as they appear.

Of course, applying cybersecurity measures dynamically is easier said than done. It requires a constant vigilance and dedication to staying up-to-date on the latest threats and defenses. It’s not something you can do once and forget about it. Plus, as a HIPAA covered entity, there are things you must do and document monthly, quarterly, and annually. But it’s worth it. After all, the consequences of a cyberattack can be devastating personally and professionally it can even cause the loss of your practice.

Just imagine waking up one morning to find that your bank account has been drained, your credit cards have been maxed out, your identity has been stolen and your patient database is for sale on the dark web. It’s not a pretty picture, but it’s a reality that many people face every day. And the sad truth is, many of these attacks could have been prevented if the victims had taken the time to apply dynamic cybersecurity measures.

Now, I know what you’re thinking. “But Lee, I don’t have the time or expertise to stay on top of cybersecurity measures. I have a life to live and a practice full of patients that need me!” And that’s a valid concern. But the good news is, there are plenty of resources out there to help you. From online tutorials to a plethora of software options, there are plenty of ways to stay informed and protected.

And let’s not forget about the human element of cybersecurity. As much as we rely on technology to keep us safe, it’s important to remember that  we are the weakest link in the chain. A hacker may be able to crack a password or exploit a vulnerability, but they can’t do it without someone making a mistake. That’s why it’s important to educate ourselves and others about cybersecurity best practices. Better yet, take the next step and partner with a cybersecurity firm that specializes in HIPAA and HITECH compliant services.

So, in conclusion, cybersecurity measures must be applied dynamically to stay ahead of cybercriminals. A “set it and forget it” strategy is not enough. It’s like putting a band-aid on a bullet wound. Sure, it might help in the short term, but it’s not a long-term solution. By staying vigilant and up-to-date on the latest threats and defenses, we can keep ourselves and our online presence safe. And hey, if all else fails, there’s always the option of going off the grid and living in a cabin in the woods. But let’s hope it doesn’t come to that.
